INFORMATION FOR BUSINESSES HIRING INDEPENDENT CONTRACTORS

A written contract with the independent contractor is required.  it should state that the contractor will be paid on a per-project basis rather than hourly.  The contractor will not be eligible of benefits offered to employees and will be able to market his services without restriction.

You must have the contractor's employer ID number or social security number as well as business names and addresses.  Keep copies of the independent's business cards, letterhead stationery, and above all, invoices.

Contractors should not have a company email address or space to work at your business premises.  They should not be paid through payroll but through your accounts payable system, but only after submitting an invoice to you for work done.
